Yestiday the 17th of Nov., flagged-off the 2015/2016 dry season rice and wheat farming as well as the CBN’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, a financing model for small holder farmers in Kebbi State.
During the occasion at Zauro Airstrip in the outskirts of Birnin Kebbi , the president said the CBN project had the potential for creating millions of jobs and addressing poverty.
He said the importance of agriculture to the economy cannot be over emphasised hence his administration would diversify the economy to give greater emphasis on agricultural production.
He commended Kebbi for taking the lead in the project and its effort in revival of rice and wheat production with other six states of Zamfara , Adamawa ,Jigawa , Ebonyi Gombe and Taraba who have demonstrated and indicated interest for assisting farmers.
“The importance of agriculture to the economy cannot be over emphasised, economic diversification is the only way to prosperity so go back to land and develop agriculture because the era of depending on oil is over “ , he said.
CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said the programme was designed to create economic linkages between farmers and processors not only to ensure output of rice and wheat but also close the gap between production and consumption.
“The CBN has set aside N40 billion under the programme out of the N220 billion micro, small and medium enterprise fund for farmers at single digit interest rate of maximum 9%,” he said.
The CBN governor stated that over 200,000 rice and wheat farmers will benefit from the scheme ranging from N150, 000 to N250,000 to assist in procuring necessary agricultural inputs.
Governor Atiku Bagudu commended the CBN for the programme and assured that the state had the capacity to produce ice and wheat for both domestic and external consumption.
