Political Annalyst Josh Amaezechi Wrote An Open Letter To Nigeria Senate

OPEN LETTER TO THE NIGERIAN SENATE
Dear Senators,
IS NIGERIA NOT DRIFTING INTO QUASI- DEMOCRATIC FASCISM?
I have read with serious concern that you are passing a bill to regulate freedom to the use of social media. I am concerned that with thousands of the Youth in the South East on the streets for nearly one month, discussing social media is what you considered a matter of urgent national importance.

While I share your concern to minimize the use of media to send false information, I believe that other laws of the land had covered this matter. Hence, I wonder why scarce national resources have to be spent on making a new law. With the implied fluidity of the new law that you are making, is Nigeria not drifting into quasi-democratic fascism?
I can understand your concerns for abuses on Social media but over 99% of Nigerians are daily abused by the violation of the constitutional rights of citizens by those in power. We are abused daily by the non-conduct of Local Government elections, with LGA funds being appropriated unconstitutionally. We are daily abused by the news of arrest of corrupt politicians without convictions. We are abused by illegal detentions, poor electricity supply, lack of petrol to fuel our cars. What happened to the oversight functions of the Senate? How did the regulation of social media become a priority at a time when Nigerians are groping in the dark trying to understand the economic policy direction of Government? How did the regulation of Social media take priority over unemployment, non-payment of workers salary in the States, insecurity in the land etc?
Many of us are concerned that the Law on Social media feels like a veiled Decree 2 and an attempt to stifle freedom of expression. Now, as you approve the 2016 budget for President Buhari, please approve more money for prisons and jails. We will not surrender our freedom of speech, even at the point of death.
Thank you for using your time that is paid with our money to make this very important new law. That is a measure of your love for the people of Nigeria and how well you are doing your oversight functions.
Your humble citizen,
Rev. Joshua Amaezech
